In a recent interview, Alice Weidel, leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), made a bold claim that Adolf Hitler was a leftist, a statement she defended during her television appearance.
After her conversation with Elon Musk, Weidel reiterated her controversial viewpoint. “I am an economist, and it’s clear to us that Adolf Hitler was a leftist,” she stated in an interview with RTL and ntv, emphasizing her unwavering stance.
Weidel elaborated: “Adolf Hitler employed leftist tactics, including media control, restrictions on public discourse, and the exclusion of dissenting opinions.”
During her discussion with Musk, Weidel pointed to Hitler’s policies such as nationalization of industries and high taxes, asserting, “The greatest misconception after this horrific era in our history is labeling Adolf Hitler as right-wing and conservative.” She emphasized, “He was the complete opposite. He wasn’t a conservative or libertarian; he embodied communist and socialist characteristics.” Musk reportedly agreed with her assessment.
Historically, communists, socialists, and social democrats were persecuted under the Nazi regime. Estimates suggest that between 1933 and 1945, as many as 30,000 communists were executed or died in concentration camps due to oppressive conditions.
Weidel dismissed allegations that her discussion with Musk could lead to financial benefits for the AfD or potential illicit party financing. She argued that the dialogue was simply a conversation between two individuals on a platform and did not constitute any wrongdoing. Concerns have been raised by watchdog organizations regarding the broader reach that such conversations may have compared to regular user contributions, thus characterizing it as political advertising given the platform’s capacity to significantly amplify content.
