No fewer than 18 individuals lost their lives in a series of coordinated attacks targeting several communities in the Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State on Sunday.
The tragic incidents unfolded in Umukabia, Eziawa, Ihitte Nasa, Umuhu, Amaoku, and Amaebe, leaving victims with severe machete wounds that have incited fear and outrage among local residents.
Eyewitnesses reported that following the annual masquerade festival celebrated in the affected areas, locals gathered at a bar to unwind. The revelry turned into horror when passers-by later discovered all nine individuals inside—both patrons and staff—lying lifeless in a chilling scene, each suffering from multiple machete wounds.
An anonymous source revealed, “Everyone in the bar, all nine people, were found dead, butchered beyond recognition. We were just a few blocks away when it happened, and there was no sound of gunshots or any disturbance. We suspect members of a local militant group are behind this.”
Authorities reported that in addition to the nine victims discovered in the bar, three bodies were found in Umukabia, another five in Eziawa village, and five more in Ihitte Nasa, all bearing similar machete injuries.
Residents are grappling with the reality that such brutal attacks occurred without anyone witnessing the assailants enter or exit the communities. “Orsu has lost 18 promising lives in a single day,” expressed the source, hinting at possible internal collaboration among local militants.
The region has a history of turmoil due to the influence of local militant groups, which have previously driven residents away. However, recent military operations had allowed for a gradual return of displaced residents until these latest attacks reignited fears.
Imo State Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the attacks, stating that investigations are underway. “The police are aware of the situation, and the Commissioner of Police has formed a specialized security team across various agencies to investigate the case. We urge the community to remain calm during this troubling time,” he stated.
A source within the police force suggested the motive behind the attacks may have been to instill fear among residents, potentially driving them from their homes once again.
