MADISON, Wis. – Rubi Patricia Vergara, a gifted 14-year-old, was remembered for her artistic talents and musical ability during heartfelt funeral services on Saturday morning. Family and friends shared memories of her kindness and creativity, highlighting how she often crafted personalized gifts for loved ones.
Vergara, a student at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, tragically lost her life in a school shooting on Monday, which also claimed the life of her teacher, Erin West.
“She embodied a quiet strength and had a profound care for others,” reflected Tom Flaherty, lead pastor of City Church, where the service was held. “Rubi’s faith was remarkable for her age.”
West’s funeral is scheduled for Monday at Doxa Church in Madison. Meanwhile, the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the incident, as two additional students remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Family friend Dawn Moris spoke eloquently about Vergara’s empathy, showcasing a small crocheted smiley face potato made by her. “Her caring and creative spirit was evident in everything she did,” Moris remarked.
In addition to her crafting skills, Vergara played keyboard in a family worship band and had an extraordinary ability to harmonize while singing. During the service, her aunt honored her by performing her favorite song on the guitar.
The gunman, 15-year-old Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, tragically shot herself during the incident and later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. Investigations are ongoing, focusing on Rupnow’s connections to a suspect in California who was allegedly plotting an attack on a government building, raising questions about her motivation.
