NASSAU, The Bahamas, April 2, 2025 — The Bahamas Grid Company (BGC) has announced the commencement of a significant $130 million project aimed at upgrading the grid system on the island of New Providence. This initiative will also establish BGC as the key authority for the long-term maintenance of the island’s electrical infrastructure, including all poles, wires, and substations. The project, structured as a pioneering public-private partnership, is set to inject critical capital and expertise into New Providence, which has seen an unprecedented surge in electricity demand over recent decades.
“This is a very exciting time for The Bahamas,” stated J. Eric Pike, Chairman of the Board at BGC. “We will enhance and storm-harden 32 miles of transmission lines across the eastern section of the island, ensuring more reliable power supply for all residents and businesses. The new infrastructure will also be capable of transmitting higher energy loads, significantly reducing energy loss during distribution.”
The grid enhancements are expected to create a more affordable, reliable, and resilient energy system for the region. Furthermore, these upgrades will minimize planned power outages during maintenance work.
“As we take on the management of grid operations on New Providence, BGC will perform most of its tasks on energized lines. This means that electricity customers on the island will experience fewer planned outages during our upgrades,” added Pike.
In addition, this capability will provide valuable training opportunities for new employees at BGC.
“Working on the electrical grid is a fulfilling career, as maintaining uninterrupted service is crucial for homes, schools, and businesses,” commented Mei Shibata, a Board Director at BGC. “BGC is eager to train existing employees and young Bahamians who aspire to join our team, offering meaningful hands-on work and growth opportunities within the company,” she noted.
The Bahamas Grid Company will keep the public informed on the progress of the project and available job opportunities through its official channels.
