Former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised alarms about Nigeria’s escalating crisis, with 38 million citizens teetering on the brink of extreme hunger.
Obi criticized the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu for alleged excessive spending, arguing that such fiscal irresponsibility has sharply deteriorated the living conditions of many Nigerians. He pointed to several instances of waste, including a staggering $100 million acquisition of a new presidential jet, N21 billion allocated for renovating the vice president’s residence, and N15 billion set aside for constructing a clinic for the National Assembly.
“You cannot ask people to fast while you are feasting,” Obi asserted.
In a recent interview, Obi urged the Federal Government to redirect its limited resources towards vital development sectors like health, education, poverty alleviation, and security.
“With 38 million Nigerians facing extreme hunger, Nigeria has become the poverty capital of the world. Human insecurity and food insecurity are critical issues. We must invest in agriculture to combat hunger, unemployment, and inflation,” Obi emphasized.
Looking ahead, he hinted at the potential for alliances with other opposition parties to tackle the pressing issues of hunger and insecurity as the nation approaches the 2027 presidential election.
