Sea levels receded significantly at Thottappally on Wednesday evening, exposing the seabed, while other coastal regions in Alappuzha experienced heavy swells.
Kerala is facing isolated heavy rains as a result of a weather system developing in the Bay of Bengal, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for eight districts from Thrissur to Kasaragod. The depression is expected to shift west-northwestward, crossing the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts, particularly near Chennai, early Thursday morning. As per the IMD, light showers will persist across Kerala for the next five days.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has also alerted the public regarding a swell surge along the Kerala coastline, effective from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening. A red alert has been issued for coastal areas including Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kannur, and Kasaragod, along with parts of Kollam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram, and Thrissur. Fishermen are advised to refrain from using small vessels due to predicted wave surges, with all small boat activities at coastal entry points suspended. Residents are urged to avoid beach activities as coastal erosion is anticipated.
This information underscores the ongoing weather challenges facing Kerala, highlighting precautions for public safety in light of the impending conditions.
