Pierre has officially designated September 27 as “Julien Alfred Day,” celebrating the extraordinary accomplishments of Olympian Julien Alfred at the recent Paris Olympics. Alfred has earned the title of the world’s fastest woman after clinching the gold medal in the 100 meters.
During a pre-Cabinet press briefing on Monday, Prime Minister Pierre announced the establishment of the national holiday and detailed plans to honor Alfred’s return to St. Lucia on September 24.
At just 23 years old, Alfred made history as the first individual from St. Lucia to achieve an Olympic medal, winning gold in the women’s 100 meters with a remarkable national record of 10.72 seconds, along with a silver in the 200 meters.
Celebrations for her homecoming will commence with a motorcade along the East Coast upon her arrival on September 24. Following this, national school rallies will be held on September 25 at the Soufriere Mini Stadium and La Resource Playing Field, celebrating her achievements. On September 26, Alfred will visit Ciceron Primary School to unveil a mural in her honor, alongside significant announcements.
The festivities for “Julien Alfred Day” will culminate in a free concert at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on September 27, inviting all Saint Lucians to join in the celebration of their national icon.
