Worldcoin has officially rebranded as World, marking the launch of its Ethereum layer-2 network, World Chain, and introducing several significant developments.
During a keynote address on October 17, World founder Sam Altman unveiled the rebranding alongside enhancements for its iris-scanning Orb devices. The transformation to “World” is now evident across all digital platforms.
The upgraded Orb devices, now equipped with Nvidia hardware, promise to be up to five times more powerful while reducing their carbon footprint and minimizing component requirements.
These advanced Orbs will soon be deployed in self-service kiosks, initially limited to select markets, as part of an initiative to accelerate global proof of human verification deployment.
World is also broadening its identity verification options beyond Orbs, introducing a program called World ID Credentials, which allows users to authenticate their identity using NFC-enabled government-issued passports, enhancing flexibility in the verification process.
The company has launched World App 3.0, introducing innovative features such as the World ID Deep Face, designed to detect and block deepfakes. This functionality aims to ensure the authenticity of video content, providing heightened security amidst the growing prevalence of AI-generated media.
In addition, World has announced integrations with widely-used applications, streamlining identity verification and access to its services within familiar platforms.
Launch of World Chain Mainnet
The much-anticipated Ethereum layer-2 network, first revealed in April, has officially launched following the keynote event. World Chain aims to enhance user efficiency and functionality through the integration of World ID, World App, and Worldcoin cryptocurrency (WLD).
This new network will prioritize onboarding verified human users over bots, granting them access to block space and offering free gas allowances to incentivize participation.
World Chain is already home to top industry projects, including Uniswap, Optimism, Alchemy, and Dune.
WLD Token Price Update
Despite recent positive trends, the price of WLD has not shown a significant reaction to these announcements, dipping 1.4% to $2.20 at the time of this report. Nonetheless, the token remains up 28.4% over the past week and has soared over 47% in the last month.
