In a significant development during the fourth round of vote counting in the Erode (East) constituency by-election, DMK’s VC Chandirakumar has taken the lead over NTK’s MK Seethalakshmi by a margin of 30,854 votes. This election is taking place following the tragic passing of Congress MLA EVKS Elangovan on December 14, 2024.
Chandirakumar, a former MLA representing the constituency as a member of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, is now facing off against Seethalakshmi, who previously contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Tiruppur under the NTK banner. Notably, the main opposition parties, including AIADMK, the BJP, and actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, chose to boycott this election.
The voter turnout for this by-election reached 67.97%, a decline compared to the 74.79% seen in the 2023 by-election. The voting occurred on February 5, 2025, coinciding with elections for the Delhi Assembly and the Milkipur Assembly seat bypoll in Uttar Pradesh. A total of 237 polling stations across 53 locations facilitated the election, managed by 983 personnel.
The constituency has a total of 2,27,546 eligible voters, comprising 1,10,128 men, 1,17,381 women, and 37 transpersons. Ultimately, 1,54,657 voters participated, consisting of 74,260 men, 80,376 women, and 21 transpersons.
