In a recent interview, director Matt Reeves shared insights into his involvement with “The Penguin,” a spin-off series centered around Colin Farrell’s character. Reeves, who was integral to the show’s development, faced scheduling conflicts due to his commitment to “The Batman Part II,” which ultimately prevented him from directing an episode.
“I really wanted to,” Reeves expressed, reflecting on the initial discussions with Farrell that made directing seem possible. However, ongoing post-production work on “The Batman” and script obligations for the sequel left him unable to take on the directing role. “There was a point where we realized… I really couldn’t be also directing,” he added.
Despite this setback, Reeves remains open to future contributions to the series, stating, “If [a] schedule ever presented itself… I think it would be really fun.” He also conveyed his enthusiasm for continuing to collaborate with Farrell in “The Batman Part II.”
As an executive producer of “The Penguin,” Reeves confirmed that familiar faces Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Paul Dano’s Riddler will not make appearances in the series. He emphasized that the narrative will delve into Farrell’s character’s ascension to power within the Gotham universe, remarking, “When I’m doing a Batman story, Batman and Bruce is going to be the main point of view.”
“The Penguin” is set to premiere on HBO Max on September 19, with a cast featuring Michael Kelly, Cristin Milioti, and Clancy Brown. Described by Farrell as “really dark” and “incredibly violent,” the series promises to further deepen the Gotham narrative. “The Batman Part II” is anticipated to release in 2026.
