DES MOINES, Iowa — A water buffalo that escaped from its pen has been located in a wooded area of Des Moines, days after sustaining injuries during an attempt to return it to its owner’s property, according to local officials.
The animal was discovered following a Saturday incident when it wandered away and displayed aggressive behavior in the Pleasant Hill suburb, prompting a police response.
Efforts by law enforcement and animal control to contain the water buffalo resulted in a confrontation, leading to the animal being shot in the chest by an officer. This incident prompted an immediate investigation and public concern.
The animal has since been surrendered by its owner and is currently receiving treatment at the Iowa State Large Animal Hospital. Following medical care, it is expected to join a local sanctuary dedicated to animal rescue.
Water buffaloes are known to weigh up to 2,650 pounds and are the largest members of the Bovini tribe, which includes other species like bison and African buffalo.
