Rihanna Makes Waves with Music Return as Smurfette in Upcoming Animated Film
Rihanna is set to make a highly anticipated return to music as the voice of Smurfette in the new animated movie Smurfs. Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for this exciting film, showcasing the pop icon covering Belinda Carlisle’s hit song "Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” The trailer features a brief introduction by Rihanna and hints at more original music from the superstar.
In addition to her voice role, Rihanna has also taken on production duties and contributed original tracks to the soundtrack. During a CinemaCon event in 2023, she humorously revealed her desire to play the role of Papa Smurf but settled on voicing the beloved Smurfette instead. This film marks another milestone in her acting journey, joining her previous credits which include Ocean’s 8, Battleship, This Is the End, and Guava Island.
Directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon, Smurfs is poised for release in theaters on July 18. The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including John Goodman, Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, and Kurt Russell. While the franchise continues, this iteration of Smurfs distinguishes itself from previous movies which featured different voice talents for the character of Smurfette.
After a busy 2023 that included headlining the Super Bowl halftime show and performing her Oscar-nominated song "Lift Me Up" from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Rihanna has recently taken a step back from the public eye as she embraces motherhood with her two children. As excitement builds for her return, fans eagerly await what’s next in her vibrant career.
