The Democratic National Convention continued its energetic proceedings last night at Chicago’s United Center, captivating attendees with powerful performances from local icon Common, legendary soul artist Patti LaBelle, and Atlanta crunk sensation Lil Jon.
Common, who has been a steadfast supporter of the Democratic Party for years, showcased his new anthem “Fortunate,” adapting the lyrics to recognize American athletes at the Olympics and highlight the party’s presidential nominee: “Fortunate, yo, we got the gold in Paris/We fortunate, y’all, for Kamala Harris!”
Patti LaBelle lent her iconic voice to an emotional in-memoriam segment, delivering a heartfelt rendition of “You Are My Friend,” a track from her celebrated debut solo album.
Lil Jon energized the crowd during the roll-call vote, which formally recognized Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as the Democratic nominees. He performed parts of his hit “Turn Down for What,” rallying the audience with chants of, “We’re not going back!” He passionately exclaimed, “V.P. Harris, Governor Walz!” over the familiar beats of “Get Low.”
The roll-call procedure, primarily symbolic due to a previous virtual vote designating Harris as the nominee, was transformed into a musical celebration under the direction of DJ Cassidy. As delegates pledged their support for Harris and Walz, thematic songs echoed throughout the venue, including Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” during New Jersey’s selection. The engaging segment lasted over an hour, showcasing a blend of politics and music.
The 2024 Democratic National Convention commenced on Monday, August 19, with Jason Isbell setting the tone by performing “Something More Than Free” on the opening night.
