Bon Iver has unveiled their highly anticipated EP, SABLE, marking their first new music in over five years and their first EP since 2009. Accompanying the release are striking new music videos for the tracks “Things Behind Things Behind Things” and “Awards Season,” both featuring captivating black-and-white visuals directed by Erinn Springer. Justin Vernon is prominently featured in these new clips.
SABLE comprises a deeply personal triptych, with Vernon drawing from various moments in his life. “Things Behind Things Behind Things” was written during a period of creative uncertainty in 2020. The following year, Vernon found clarity while in Key West, which inspired the track “S P E Y S I D E.” He then crafted “Awards Season,” which includes a sample from Phil Cook and Amelia Meath’s “Miles Away,” during contemplative walks around Minneapolis’ Lake of the Isles in 2023.
Produced by Vernon alongside Jim-E Stack, SABLE was recorded at Vernon’s April Base studio in Wisconsin. The EP showcases an array of talented contributors, including pedal steel player Greg Leisz, multi-instrumentalist Michael Lewis, trumpeter Trever Hagen, and string instrumentalist Rob Moose, among others.
Since the release of 2019’s i,i, Bon Iver has shared several singles, including “PDLIF,” “AUATC,” “Second Nature,” and “So Unimportant” with Ethan Gruska. Their collaboration with the National on “Weird Goodbyes” further showcases their evolving artistry. Vernon also lent his talents to Taylor Swift’s popular tracks “Exile” and “Evermore” as well as to the Japanese House’s “Dionne.” Additionally, last year, Bon Iver collaborated with Zach Bryan on the track “Boys of Faith.”
