The long-standing social exclusion of the Ossan community, the Labba family, and Muaddins at the Puthoorppally Muslim Jama-Ath in Changanassery has officially concluded after 237 years.
In a pivotal meeting held by the Kerala Waqf Board on Wednesday, a resolution was made to grant membership and voting rights to these previously marginalized groups, marking a historic shift in the organization’s policies.
The Jama-Ath committee unanimously resolved to include all members of the Ossan community, Labba family, and Muaddins residing in the Changanassery municipality as well as the neighboring Payippad, Thrikkodithanam, Vazhappilly, and Madappilly panchayats. This membership initiative is set to be completed within the next three months, culminating in elections for the committee.
The new members will now be allowed to engage in general body meetings and will benefit from the same privileges as other Jama-Ath members.
This decision comes after previous concerns were raised regarding the denial of rights to these groups. The Kerala Waqf Board had indicated its intention to take legal action against the Jama-Ath for the discriminatory practices that contravened both Islamic principles and constitutional rights. The Board criticized the actions of the Mahal committee, asserting that they violated the basic human rights of the affected members.
The Board also issued directives against practices such as excommunication and denial of essential services, which were highlighted as violations of fundamental rights protected under the Constitution and Waqf regulations.
Key officials from the Board were present at the meeting, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and equal rights for all community members.
