Viktor Hovland demonstrated impressive consistency during a tumultuous Saturday at the Valspar Championship, entering the final round in a three-way tie for the lead at Innisbrook. With numerous players still in contention, the atmosphere remains charged.
Jacob Bridgeman, in his first time leading after 36 holes, rallied from a four-shot deficit at the turn. He secured a one-under 70, placing him in a tie with Hovland (69) and Nico Echavarria (66) at seven-under.
The competition is fierce, highlighted by Justin Thomas’ remarkable performance. Starting with uncertainty about making the cut, Thomas surged with an impressive 30 on the back nine, finishing with a 65, his best round ever at Innisbrook, and just two shots off the lead.
Jordan Spieth entertained fans with his renowned ability, making birdies from difficult positions despite missing a pair of short putts, ultimately carding a 67. He remains only four shots back as the leaderboard tightens.
Byeong Hun An briefly held solo possession of the lead at nine-under but faltered with five bogeys over the final seven holes, finishing with a 72.
“It’s fun to be in contention, but a bit stressful when you don’t feel completely confident,” Hovland remarked. “However, seeing putts drop and finishing close to the hole is extremely rewarding.”
Echavarria, a two-time PGA Tour winner, showcased his skills with a bogey-free 66, notably making birdies on all three par 3s on the back nine. “This golf course challenges your precision. You need to drive well, hit the greens, and navigate tough conditions. Our chances look promising for tomorrow,” he stated.
Ricky Castillo contributed a solid 68 and is trailing by one shot. A packed leaderboard sees strong players like Thomas and Shane Lowry (70) at five-under, while An and Billy Horschel (69) are in a large group just a shot behind. Lucas Glover (69) is also among those four shots back with Spieth.
“The leaderboard is stacked with about 25 to 30 players who could still clinch victory,” commented Jeremy Paul, who shot a 70 and is just two shots behind the leaders. “I’m focused on putting together a solid round and seeing where I land.”
