Video game voice and motion capture performers have initiated a strike for the second time in a decade, marking a significant moment in the industry.
After 18 months of negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and major video game companies, including industry giants, a work stoppage commenced on Friday morning. SAG-AFTRA highlighted that the central issue impeding agreement revolves around protections against the misuse of artificial intelligence.
“We will not accept a contract that permits companies to exploit A.I. to the detriment of our members,” stated the union’s president. “Enough is enough. When these companies are ready to present an agreement that is fair and sustainable for our members, we will be prepared to negotiate.”

In response, a spokesperson for the gaming companies asserted that the AI terms SAG-AFTRA rejected are among the strongest in the entertainment sector. According to this spokesperson, 24 out of 25 contract proposals have been agreed upon, leaving AI as the final issue to resolve.
While the specific contract language under negotiation remains confidential, the concerns resonate with broader discussions around AI’s impact on the arts. Voice actors and motion capture performers fear that, without adequate protections, video game companies may leverage their work to develop AI models capable of replacing human labor.
Additionally, the potential use of AI could hinder opportunities for emerging performers, as roles typically filled by newcomers may be increasingly assigned to AI, making it challenging for young talent to enter the industry.
Interestingly, earlier this year, SAG-AFTRA secured a side agreement with an AI company, indicating that the union is not entirely opposed to AI technologies.
This strike is not the first for SAG-AFTRA’s gaming division. In 2016, voice actors conducted a strike lasting nearly a year, primarily addressing longstanding issues like bonuses, royalties, and workplace safety, rather than emergent technological challenges. The path to resolution between the two sides could potentially be lengthy.
