Victims of Sexual Violence Endure Unprecedented Struggles for Justice
In a heart-wrenching account from Egbeda, Lagos State, a father, Mr. Samuel Olajide, described the nightmare suffered by his 17-year-old daughter, who was violently assaulted in their home. “A suspect broke in, assaulted my daughter, and stole N180,000,” he recounted, emotion evident in his voice.
As Olajide reflected on the incident that occurred on July 11, 2023, he expressed profound regret about being unable to protect his daughter from heinous criminals. “While my wife and I were at work, she was left defenseless,” he explained, detailing how his daughter, reading the Bible, was caught off guard by the intruder’s sudden appearance.
Upon entering the house after work, Olajide was devastated to find his daughter unconscious and vulnerable. “Her clothes were torn, and she showed signs of severe trauma,” he said, explaining how he rushed her to medical professionals for urgent care.
Following the report to the Isheri Police Division, authorities arrested a suspect, identified as Osunyomi, who matched the victim’s description. However, the family’s hopes for justice soon turned to disillusionment when police actions led to the suspect’s release.
Frustration Grows Over Police Conduct
Despite paying N25,000 for essential forensic records, Olajide faced continued obstacles, including unnecessary fees and police negligence. “After my payments, nothing significant was done, and the suspect was allowed to return to the streets,” he stated, reflecting on the painful reality of police inaction.
In a shocking twist, the father learned from police that the suspect had been released due to insufficient evidence. “I was forced to escalate the situation by contacting higher authorities, including the Commissioner of Police,” he said, revealing his desperation for accountability.
“The trauma continues as the perpetrator now roams freely in our neighborhood, impacting my daughter’s mental health,” he lamented, emphasizing the urgent need for reform in law enforcement procedures concerning sexual violence cases.
Another Disturbing Case of Abuse
In a separate incident, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped at the Ogudu Police Station by an Assistant Superintendent, further compounding the urgency to address systemic failures in protecting victims of sexual assault. The girl had gone to the station seeking help to retrieve a stolen phone, only to experience unspeakable trauma at the hands of someone sworn to protect her.
“No one should have to endure such horrors, especially at a place that is supposed to provide safety,” remarked a concerned parent. This incident, like many others, has highlighted the pressing need for comprehensive reforms within the police system.
Surge in Sexual Violence Cases
Recent reports reveal alarming statistics of escalating sexual violence in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos State, where cases rose from 3,446 in 2019 to 6,389 in just four years. Public outcry has surged, demanding effective interventions and systemic changes in how sexual assault cases are handled.
Authorities are urged to strengthen partnerships and improve training for law enforcement personnel to ensure that perpetrators face justice and that victims receive the support they need to heal.
As ongoing cases highlight the struggle for justice in sexual violence incidents, advocates are calling for immediate action to end the cycle of abuse and negligence in Nigeria’s legal system. It is vital that victims receive not only justice but also comprehensive care and support as they navigate the aftermath of their traumatic experiences.
