A tragic accident occurred on Sunday along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way in Maryland, Lagos State, resulting in the death of a pedestrian with hearing impairment. The incident involved two commercial minibuses, one of which lost control while speeding and collided with a stationary vehicle before striking the pedestrian, who was waiting at a designated bus stop near Temac Filling Station.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the accident, detailing that it was a devastating occurrence for the victim, who was simply waiting for transport. The minibuses involved were Suzuki models with registration numbers EPE 279 YJ and BDG 558 YG.
Preliminary investigations suggest that reckless speeding caused one of the vehicles to veer out of control, leading to the unfortunate incident. LASEMA officials, alongside the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and local police, quickly responded to the scene, securing the area and initiating a thorough investigation into the crash.
The victim’s remains were eventually moved by officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit. In response to the tragedy, Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, emphasized the need for commercial drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and maintain their vehicles, particularly the braking systems.
Giwa also pointed out that Lagos’ Intelligence Transport System is in place to monitor speed violations at critical areas and urged drivers to follow speed limits diligently to protect lives and property. He stressed, “Road safety is a collective responsibility. Reckless driving and contempt for traffic laws endanger public safety. I urge all motorists to operate within legal parameters to prevent unnecessary loss of life.”
