The Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Productivity emphasized that marketplaces should evolve beyond traditional commerce into innovative hubs that leverage technology.
Speaking in Ado Ekiti during the inauguration of the State and Local Government chapter executives of the National Union of Market Traders Employers of Nigeria, the minister highlighted the importance of adapting to new business methods in today’s rapidly changing economic landscape.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to improving security benefits for traders nationwide, she acknowledged the challenges faced by the informal sector, particularly market traders. The government aims to implement policies that enhance the ease of doing business and improve working conditions for these traders.
The ministry plans to collaborate with the national union to provide essential support, skills development, and financial empowerment, enabling members to contribute more effectively to the country’s economy.
While promising ongoing government support for the union’s initiatives, the minister encouraged the national union to adhere to established grievance procedures to promote peace and transparency within the community and enhance the livelihoods of market traders.
The union’s National President stated its mission to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerian traders, pledging to cooperate with the government to reduce the high costs of goods in the markets.
The Ekiti Chairman of the union announced ongoing efforts to compile comprehensive data on all markets in the state, along with plans to establish loan and grant schemes to assist traders across local markets.
