Iranian hackers have reportedly leaked sensitive information related to Donald Trump’s electoral campaign to individuals associated with the Biden campaign, as revealed by the FBI and U.S. intelligence agencies. This breach is believed to have occurred through unsolicited emails sent in late June and early July, prior to Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
Authorities have found no evidence indicating that the hacking recipients responded to the emails. In August, officials highlighted Iran’s intentions to sow discord and undermine confidence in American institutions in the lead-up to the November election.
U.S. officials revealed that Iran employed “social engineering and other methods” to attempt direct access to both Democratic and Republican campaigns—strategies previously used by both Iran and Russia in various international contexts.
In a statement, the FBI reported that Iranian malicious actors have persisted in their efforts since June, targeting U.S. media organizations with stolen materials from Trump’s campaign.
A spokesperson for the Trump campaign stated that the hack demonstrates Iran’s interference in the election to benefit Democrats, suggesting they fear Trump’s potential reinstatement of strict sanctions against Iran. They called for Biden and Harris to clarify their knowledge regarding the leaked materials.
In response, a spokesperson for the Harris campaign confirmed that they have been cooperating with authorities since learning about the hacks but stated they were unaware of any campaign materials being directly sent to them. She emphasized the campaign’s strong condemnation of foreign election interference.
The FBI confirmed that they have been in contact with those affected by the hack and will persist in their investigation to neutralize the responsible parties.
This development arises amidst intensified scrutiny concerning Trump’s security, especially following a recent assassination attempt at his Florida golf course. Trump addressed the situation by expressing a commitment to continue his life despite potential threats.
Following a gunman attack during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, U.S. officials noted heightened security measures due to Iranian threats against Trump’s life. During a rally in Long Island, Trump stated, “God spared my life… Not once, but twice,” drawing applause from supporters.
Attendees at the Long Island rally expressed outrage over the recent assassination attempt, pointing fingers at political rhetoric for escalating tensions. Supporters voiced concerns about Trump’s safety and the inadequacy of his security measures, emphasizing their belief in the necessity of more protection for the former president.
At the rally, Trump sparked controversy when he referenced Springfield, Ohio, which has been embroiled in debate regarding faulty claims about its immigrant community, prompting boos from the audience.
