PORTSMOUTH, USA – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Forward (WMEC 911) has successfully returned to their home port in Portsmouth after a 60-day patrol in the Caribbean Sea, concluding their mission on July 27.
During this deployment, the Forward was actively involved in operations within the Seventh Coast Guard District, enhancing efforts in support of the Joint Interagency Task Force – South. The crew conducted vital detection and monitoring operations that resulted in significant interdiction missions, playing a crucial role in reducing the influx of illegal drugs destined for the United States and disrupting transnational criminal organizations (TCO).
In collaboration with naval forces from multiple nations, including partner forces from Canada and the Netherlands, as well as an aviation detachment from the Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron, the Forward helped apprehend five suspected smugglers and seize an impressive 8,248 pounds of narcotics.
Data obtained from these at-sea operations were instrumental for federal agencies in various countries, leading to the arrest of an alleged high-ranking member of a TCO.
In addition to their operational successes, the Forward’s crew performed a humanitarian act, rescuing three migrants from a distressed vessel. After receiving medical care, the migrants were returned to their home country, reflecting the Coast Guard’s commitment to maritime safety and border protection.
Upon leaving the joint operating area, the crew engaged in activities designed to enhance partnerships and strengthen operational coordination. On July 22, the crew facilitated a narcotics offload in Port Everglades, Florida, fostering professional exchanges and training with an organized crime drug enforcement task force and US Customs and Border Protection canine handlers. The Forward also served as a base for helicopter operations alongside the US Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
“The operational achievements of the Forward underscore the crew’s unwavering dedication and the collaborative strength of the Joint Interagency Task Force – South,” stated the commanding officer. “I take pride in the crew’s determination to overcome every challenge encountered.”
The Coast Guard Cutter Forward, a 270-foot Famous-class medium endurance cutter, primarily focuses on counter-drug and migrant interdiction operations, enforcement of federal fishery regulations, and search and rescue missions across the Western Hemisphere.
