Washington – Criminal Charges Filed Against Hamas Leader and Militants Following October Attack
The Justice Department has announced the filing of criminal charges against Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and several other militants in connection with the October 7, 2023, attack in Israel.
The federal court complaint, submitted in New York City, outlines charges related to conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, leading to fatalities.
Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the significance of these charges, stating, “The actions highlighted today represent our commitment to dismantling every element of Hamas’ operations. We will continue to take rigorous actions.”
Yahya Sinwar, who has been at the helm of Hamas following Ismail Haniyeh’s demise in Iran, is listed as one of Israel’s most-wanted individuals. Reports suggest he has been residing in tunnels beneath Gaza for most of the past ten months, with limited contact with the outside world.
In addition to Sinwar, others charged include Haniyeh, Marwan Issa, the deputy leader of Hamas’ armed wing in Gaza and a planner of the recent attack; Khaled Mashaal, another deputy of Haniyeh and a former group leader; along with Mohammed al-Masri and Ali Baraka.
