Osmania University in Telangana has enacted a ban on dharnas, protests, and slogan-raising within its campus to ensure a “conducive and peaceful environment” for learning. This decision has faced backlash from the BRS and BJP parties.
A circular issued by the university on March 13 highlighted that recent disturbances caused by students staging protests in administrative areas were disrupting operations and misrepresenting the institution to the public.
The university’s directive stated, “Trespassing, staging dharnas and agitations, raising slogans, and obstructing administrative staff from performing their duties are strictly prohibited on campus.”
Furthermore, the university warned of potential legal action against individuals involved in such activities.
The ban has raised concerns among local political leaders. BRS spokesperson Krishank criticized the Congress-led government, labeling it as “intolerant” for stifling democratic expressions at a site historically significant for protests related to the formation of Telangana.
Reacting to this decision, BJP leader Ramchander Rao condemned it as indicative of an “undeclared emergency.” He alleged that the university’s actions are directed by the state government to suppress student voices, particularly regarding employment and other critical issues.
