ECNETNews, October 1, 2024: Dominica is poised for a tourism surge with the introduction of a new non-stop flight connecting New York/Newark to Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM). United Airlines will commence this service on February 15, 2025, with flights departing from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) every Saturday. This establishes the second direct flight route from the U.S. to Dominica.
The new route follows substantial upgrades to Douglas-Charles Airport, including a 6,351-foot runway extension and enhanced grooving, significantly improving safety and reducing flight cancellations while accommodating larger aircraft. Furthermore, the terminal has undergone improvements to boost capacity and operational efficiency.
“This new service by United Airlines is a significant advancement for the island’s tourism goals,” stated Dominica’s Minister of Tourism, Hon. Denise Charles-Pemberton. “It will help overcome the accessibility challenges that have hindered us for years.”
The direct flight route from the tri-state area, one of Dominica’s primary U.S. source markets, is expected to greatly enhance the island’s tourism sector. In addition, several new hotels are scheduled to open in 2025, adding nearly 500 rooms and increasing hotel capacity by 25%, coinciding with what is anticipated to be one of Dominica’s busiest travel seasons.
Marva Williams, CEO of the Discover Dominica Authority, emphasized the route’s importance: “The increased capacity will enable U.S. tour operators to confidently offer group travel to Dominica, allowing more visitors to experience our exceptional diving, hiking, wellness, and cultural offerings.”
This new flight launch aligns with the renowned Mas Domnik Carnival, taking place on March 3-4, 2025. Celebrated as the “Real Mas,” this Carnival showcases traditional customs through calypso music, competitions, and vibrant festivities. More details on the event are forthcoming.
“We are delighted to add Dominica to our global route network,” said a representative from United Airlines. “This route opens up access to one of the world’s most unique destinations.”
