MDMK general secretary Vaiko led a significant protest in Chennai on Wednesday, expressing deep concern over the Union Budget 2024, which he claims has failed to allocate necessary funds to Tamil Nadu.
During the demonstration, Mr. Vaiko criticized the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, stating, “The Modi administration has misled the people of Tamil Nadu by neglecting financial support for crucial projects such as the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II and relief efforts for last year’s flooding in Chennai and Thoothukudi.”
He highlighted a perceived bias in funding distribution, noting that the Union government appears to favor states allied with the BJP, referencing the Telugu Desam Party and the Janata Dal (Secular), which have received more resources in contrast to Tamil Nadu.
Emphasizing the significance of state rights, Mr. Vaiko raised alarm over the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), stating, “More than 20 students have tragically lost their lives due to NEET. The central government is perpetrating an injustice against the student community.”
In addition, he condemned the Karnataka government’s proposal to build a dam across the Cauvery River at Mekedatu, arguing that it would threaten the livelihoods of Tamil Nadu’s farmers.
The protest saw MDMK supporters vocally expressing their discontent with the current administration, demanding immediate attention to these critical issues.
