BJP General Secretary BL Santhosh stated on Sunday that the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan should be viewed as an “understanding” rather than an agreement. This remark follows a late Saturday announcement that both nations would immediately cease all military actions on land, air, and sea.
India has consistently characterized this development as an “understanding,” avoiding the term “agreement.” This ceasefire comes after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes that nearly escalated into war.
The ceasefire was initially announced by the US, claiming it resulted from successful mediation efforts. A statement revealed that after extensive discussions, both countries had agreed to a full and immediate cessation of hostilities.
Following this, Foreign Secretary Misri confirmed that the Directors General of Military Operations for both nations had agreed on the understanding during a call earlier that afternoon. Misri stated that they resolved to stop all fire and military actions effective immediately.
However, shortly after the understanding was established, multiple drone sightings and explosions were reported in Jammu and Kashmir, prompting a response from Indian air defense systems.
India accused Pakistan of violating the understanding, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stating, “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding reached earlier.” He emphasized that such breaches were taken “very, very seriously.”
Despite these allegations, the overall security situation along India’s western border remained stable through the night following the ceasefire announcement, with no reports of fires or hostile movements.
The agreement to halt military actions was made shortly after intense confrontations marked by India’s ‘Operation Sindoor,’ which targeted nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to a recent terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 26 individuals, mostly tourists.
