- The UK-Ukraine Digital Trade Agreement (DTA) is now in effect, enabling businesses from both nations to engage in faster and more cost-effective trade.
LONDON, England – The launch of the UK-Ukraine Digital Trade Agreement (DTA) on September 1 marks a significant milestone in enhancing trade relations between the two countries. This agreement is poised to facilitate quicker and cheaper trading processes for businesses on both sides.
“This digital agreement is pioneering, reflecting a transition to modern trade systems essential for Ukraine, especially given the challenges posed by ongoing conflict,” stated a government representative. Ukraine has established itself as a leading exporter of information technology services internationally, excelling in sectors like outsourcing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and mobile application development prior to the conflict.
As a global technology leader, the UK is strategically positioned to assist Ukraine’s economic recovery and shift towards a digital economy, with over half of the services exports to Ukraine already being delivered digitally.
In a statement, a business and trade secretary emphasized:
“We are transforming our trade relationship with Ukraine through one of the world’s first purely digital trade agreements. Enhanced digitalisation is crucial for supporting Ukraine’s economy as they continue their fight for independence. Our government remains committed to providing steadfast support to the Ukrainian people.”
Ukraine’s first deputy prime minister and minister of economy remarked:
“The unprecedented backing from the United Kingdom has been felt from the very beginning of the full-scale war. This digital trade agreement underscores our solidarity. Its implementation will enhance Ukraine’s integration into global supply chains, support small and medium enterprises, ensure uninterrupted access for Ukrainian IT sectors to UK markets, and provide vital aid to our economy during wartime and in future reconstruction efforts.”
A trade policy minister added:
“Given the current circumstances, where physical trade is becoming increasingly challenging, this agreement aims to simplify digital trade for businesses in Scotland and Ukraine. I believe there is overwhelming support for Ukraine across Scotland, and we are dedicated to doing everything possible to assist.”
A tech industry representative stated:
“The activation of the UK-Ukraine digital trade deal is a major advancement that will enhance technological collaboration between both nations while making trade more straightforward and affordable, particularly in light of the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict. We are eager to collaborate with partners in Ukraine and both governments to maximize the benefits of this agreement, especially in terms of regulatory cooperation and emerging technologies.”
A tech startup CEO expressed gratitude:
“We are immensely thankful to the UK Government and Ukrainian ministries for the establishment of the UK-Ukraine TechBridge programme, which has been instrumental in our success in the UK. This initiative offers essential resources for tech startups, including access to clients, investors, and mentorship opportunities, streamlining our path to growth.”
The DTA is a key element of the UK government’s broader strategy to bolster Ukraine’s digital economy, featuring initiatives like the UK-Ukraine TechBridge that encourages collaboration and investment between the tech sectors of both countries.
Moreover, the agreement focuses on fostering tech partnerships that enhance cooperation in critical areas such as cybersecurity.
