In a significant incident early Sunday morning, a man armed with a firearm was shot by Secret Service officers in close proximity to the White House, as reported by the Secret Service. The man, reportedly traveling from Indiana, was previously identified to local police as a potential suicide risk.
Authorities discovered the man’s vehicle near 17th and F Streets NW and subsequently found him nearby in an armed confrontation. The situation escalated, leading to gunfire from the Secret Service agents.
The individual was transported to a local hospital, and his condition is currently unknown. Fortunately, no injuries to Secret Service personnel have been reported.
At the time of the incident, President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, just a block away from the unfolding events at the White House.
The Secret Service has provided the following statement regarding the incident:
“On Sunday, March 9th, an adult male was shot by U.S. Secret Service personnel following an armed confrontation with law enforcement in Washington, D.C. Earlier on Saturday, local police had shared information about a suicidal individual believed to be traveling to Washington D.C. from Indiana. Around midnight, members of the Secret Service encountered the individual’s parked vehicle and saw someone fitting the description nearby. Upon approach, the individual brandished a firearm, leading to an exchange of gunfire with our personnel. The suspect was transported to an area hospital; his condition remains unknown, and no Secret Service personnel were injured. The incident is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team, which handles all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in D.C.”
