Two individuals are currently trapped following a significant ice collapse during a guided tour of a cave within Iceland’s Breidamerkurjökull glacier, authorities reported.
Emergency responders received notifications just before 3:00 PM local time on Sunday regarding the incident in the southern region of Iceland. At the time of the collapse, a group of 25 visitors, accompanied by a guide, was exploring the site.
The ice collapse affected four individuals, two of whom were rescued with serious injuries. As of 10:00 PM local time, rescue operations continued in search of the remaining two trapped individuals.
Local news sources reported that approximately 200 personnel are involved in the extensive rescue efforts, which are expected to carry on throughout the night. According to police statements made around 6:00 PM, the collapse involved an ice cave; however, a senior police officer clarified that the victims were located in a ravine between cave entrances when an ice wall fell.
The Breidamerkurjökull glacier is a well-known glacial tongue extending from the vast Vatnajökull glacier into the Jökulsárlón lagoon, famed for its stunning ice caves, which attract numerous tourists each year.
