Two moderate Democrats, both with national security backgrounds and elected to the House in 2018, are gearing up for gubernatorial races in 2025 as their party transitions from the challenges faced in the 2024 elections and seeks to connect with key voting blocs.
In a significant political shift, Virginia and New Jersey will be electing new governors in 2025. Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot, is entering a competitive primary in New Jersey, while Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA analyst, aims to become Virginia’s first female governor.
“These are the only two races in the nation where we can clearly articulate our vision for the future,” Sherrill stated, emphasizing the importance of these elections for Democrats moving forward.
Spanberger noted the challenges she and Sherrill faced in predominantly male-dominated fields. “My focus is on working hard and ensuring the path is open for those who follow,” she explained.
Both candidates aim to leverage their experiences in Congress as they turn their focus toward statewide issues. Spanberger highlighted her priorities: “I am running for governor to strengthen public schools, tackle rising living costs for Virginians, and address housing supply crises,” she said.
Since their election in 2018—part of a surge of women with national security credentials—both Sherrill and Spanberger have recognized the need for a strategic approach in Congress. Sherrill expressed her concern about the sense of urgency sometimes lacking in legislative discussions.
As the Democratic Party reassesses its direction following the presidential losses, Spanberger argues against strict labels. “What truly matters is aligning with where the voters stand,” she asserted, emphasizing the need for practical approaches to current issues like high grocery prices, escalating housing costs, and education concerns.
Sherrill cautioned that running solely on anti-Trump sentiment and support for abortion rights will not suffice. “We need to present a comprehensive vision that promises economic stability and addresses the long-term futures of families,” she stated.
Spanberger emphasized the significance of reproductive rights in Virginia, highlighting the state’s unique position in the South regarding abortion access. “We are committed to protecting and codifying women’s access to both reproductive care and contraception,” she affirmed.
As Democrats regroup after recent electoral setbacks, Sherrill highlighted their generational difference, noting their understanding of the challenges faced by families today. “It’s exciting to see candidates running for governor with school-age children, who truly understand family struggles,” she added.
In their pursuit of governorship, Sherrill and Spanberger’s campaigns will not only shape their political futures but may also set a precedent for Democratic candidates nationwide.
