In a concerning incident, the U.S. Secret Service responded to shots fired near former President Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday afternoon. According to a Secret Service spokesperson, Trump was unharmed during the event.
Steven Cheung, communications director for Trump’s campaign, confirmed, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity.” The shooting took place shortly before 2 p.m., prompting immediate action from Secret Service agents and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office personnel.
This shooting incident comes approximately two months after Trump sustained a gunshot wound during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Teri Barbera, a representative from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, reported that a “person of interest” has been detained and is currently being interrogated by authorities.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, reassured the public, stating, “The former president is safe. We will have more details soon.”
The White House confirmed that President Biden and Vice President Harris have been briefed on the situation and expressed relief over Trump’s safety while he was golfing at the international golf course.
“They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team,” a statement from the White House noted. Furthermore, Attorney General Merrick Garland has been informed and is monitoring the developments.
