ASHEBORO, N.C. — In his first outdoor rally since surviving an assassination attempt last month, Donald Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris’ stance on national security in North Carolina. This rally is part of a strategic weeklong tour aimed at diverting attention from the ongoing Democratic National Convention.
“The world is on fire, and Kamala and Biden have pushed us to the brink of World War III,” Trump declared, attributing blame for the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and the escalating conflicts involving Russia, Ukraine, and Israel.
The event took place at the North Carolina Aviation Museum and Hall of Fame, where Trump spoke behind a podium shielded by bulletproof glass as part of heightened security measures following his near-miss with a gunman in Pennsylvania on July 13.
Containers were used to bolster security, creating physical barriers and obstructing views. Snipers were stationed on nearby rooftops, while the stage featured vintage aircraft and an impressive backdrop of a large American flag.
Designed to spotlight national security issues, the rally contrasts sharply with the Democratic convention currently in session in Chicago. Trump has received advice from allies to focus on policy discussions instead of personal attacks as he adapts to competing against Harris, following President Biden’s withdrawal from the race.
The Democratic convention showcased strong rhetoric from former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, who targeted Trump during their speeches.
Michelle Obama criticized Trump, highlighting his insecurities about successful, educated individuals, particularly those who are Black. She referenced his past comments during debates, framing them as ignorant and divisive.
Barack Obama ridiculed Trump’s fixation on crowd sizes, labeling him as a disgruntled billionaire habitually complaining and expressing fears of losing to Kamala Harris.
Trump responded to the criticism, questioning the crowd if they had heard the Obamas’ recent speech and remarked on the personal nature of their attacks.
Joining Trump at the rally was Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, who portrayed Harris as a candidate chosen by political elites rather than the electorate and criticized her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Vance took aim at Walz’s military record, casting doubt on his credibility as a veteran, stating, “What won’t Stolen Valor Tim Walz lie about?”
Trump’s visit to North Carolina reflects the state’s significance in the upcoming election; this marks his second trip to the state in a week, following an address on economic issues in Asheville.
Trump enjoyed a comfortable victory in North Carolina during the 2016 election, and it remains a crucial battleground for the 2024 race.
As Trump’s plane conducted a flyover before his arrival, the crowd greeted him with enthusiastic cheers.
Supporters, including Edna Ryan, a retired flight attendant, expressed optimism about Trump’s prospects, acknowledging the need for strength moving forward. Lisa Watts, a retired business owner, shared her positive outlook, stating that she believes Harris’s record undermines her ability to lead effectively.
Watts commented on the upcoming election dynamics, predicting that the Democrats would strive to maintain high visibility for Harris, even as she anticipates a decline in the excitement surrounding her candidacy.
