Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has responded to ongoing criticism from the Congress party regarding the reopening of closed political murder cases in the state. During a law and order review meeting at police headquarters, Chief Minister Saha emphasized that reviving these cases is feasible, citing historical precedents.
“This is not an impossible task. Reopening closed murder cases is very much possible, and there have been instances of it,” he stated.
In reaction to the Chief Minister’s comments, Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman questioned the relevancy of revisiting murder cases that had been shut down or stalled under previous administrations. Barman emphasized that the Chief Minister’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims and their families was misguided.
“How can murder cases that have already seen acquittal of the accused through proper trial proceedings be reopened? It’s a foolish idea,” Barman asserted.
Legal expert Subrata Sarkar noted that reopening such cases is indeed possible if an appeal is made, provided the appellant presents a valid reason for the delay.
In the past, the BJP-led coalition government established a committee to investigate numerous politically related murder cases that had been closed during earlier governments; however, that committee did not achieve any significant results.
