ECNETNews, December 30, 2024: Trinidad and Tobago has reached a grim milestone as the murder count for 2024 has exceeded 623, prompting urgent action from the government.
The twin-island nation has officially declared a state of emergency in response to a surge in violent crime, including a recent attempted assassination of a gang leader, which authorities believe may trigger further violence.
State of Emergency Measures Implemented
This emergency declaration empowers defense force members to act as law enforcement officers, permitting warrantless raids. Additionally, the order suspends bail for suspects and allows for detaining individuals for up to 48 hours without charges, extendable for an additional seven days with court approval.
Escalating Violence in Trinidad and Tobago
The declaration highlights the escalating crisis affecting the islands, located near Venezuela. The government aims to curb the ongoing violence and restore safety to communities gripped with fear.
In recent days, multiple violent incidents have exacerbated tensions, including the shooting of five men on the outskirts of Port of Spain, a murder outside a police station, and the tragic killing of a 57-year-old woman in San Fernando. With a population of approximately 1.5 million, Trinidad and Tobago now ranks among the most violent nations in Latin America and the Caribbean for 2024.
