LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday in southwestern Michigan when an SUV collided with an Amish buggy, resulting in the death of an 8-year-old girl and serious injuries to a 12-year-old boy, the sole occupants of the horse-drawn vehicle, according to local authorities.
The young boy is currently in critical condition at a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, the collision, which took place in Van Buren County’s Lawrence Township, also resulted in the death of the horse involved.
The driver of the SUV has been arrested and is being held at the county jail on charges related to operating under the influence of an unknown substance. Fortunately, neither she nor her two passengers sustained any injuries in the incident.
The accident occurred on a county road around 8 a.m., raising concerns about road safety for vulnerable communities.
State police remind drivers to remain vigilant, particularly in areas frequented by the Amish community, emphasizing the importance of sharing the roads with horse and buggies. “They have just as much right to the roadway as passenger vehicles do,” noted a police spokesperson.
Officials clarified that it is legal for children to ride in an Amish buggy without adult supervision, highlighting the need for increased awareness among motorists.
