MASSENA, N.Y. — A tragic house fire in upstate New York has claimed the lives of six family members.
The devastating blaze erupted at approximately 10 p.m. on Monday in a single-family home located in Massena, a town situated near the St. Lawrence River and the northern border with Canada, as reported by local fire authorities.
Strong winds exacerbated the fire, allowing it to rapidly engulf the residence. Although firefighters successfully retrieved the victims from the burning structure, they ultimately succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital.
Investigations by state and county fire officials are underway to determine the fire’s cause, with initial assessments suggesting it originated in the kitchen.
Family members have identified the victims as Diana Avery, Thomas Bowen, Tiara Bowen, Joshuha Bowen, Eli Bowen, and Karmen Bowen.
Joseph Bowen, a family member, shared that Avery was the homeowner and his mother, while Thomas Bowen was his brother. He expressed gratitude for the community support, including that from emergency responders and local organizations.
“While we grieve the loss of our family members, it is heartening to see how our family has positively impacted this community,” Bowen stated, reflecting on the tragedy and the community’s response.
Massena Central School District Superintendent Ronald Burke conveyed his condolences to the school community, expressing sorrow over the loss of the three Bowen children, who were students at local junior high and elementary schools.
