A recent shark attack off the Red Sea coastline of Egypt has resulted in one tourist dead and another injured, according to officials. The incident took place on Sunday, north of Marsa Alam, a renowned resort town in eastern Egypt known for its diving activities.
The Egyptian Ministry of Environment reported that the attack happened in “deep waters outside of the designated swimming area.” While the ministry did not disclose the victims’ nationalities, reports indicate they were Italian nationals.
Tragically, a 48-year-old man from Rome lost his life, while a 69-year-old man sustained injuries. Both tourists were transported to a hospital in Port Ghalib, approximately 30 miles north of Marsa Alam.
In response to the incident, authorities announced that the swimming area in Marsa Alam will be closed, and an investigation is underway. Over the past decade, there have been four confirmed fatalities linked to shark attacks in this region, according to the Shark Research Institute. The most recent shark-related death occurred in June 2023, involving a 24-year-old tourist near Hurghada.
