HOUSTON — Multiple tornadoes swept through Texas and Mississippi on Saturday, resulting in at least two fatalities and leaving six others injured. The severe weather caused extensive damage, including overturned vehicles and destroyed homes.
Tragically, one death was reported in the Liverpool area, south of Houston, with four individuals sustaining non-critical injuries, according to local authorities. Officials noted that there were “multiple touchdown points” across Brazoria County, impacting areas between Liverpool, Hillcrest Village, and Alvin. Preliminary assessments indicated around ten homes were damaged, with officials continuing to evaluate the situation.
In Mississippi, one individual lost their life in Adams County, while two others sustained injuries in Franklin County. Local emergency services reported that tornadoes struck around Bude and Brandon, tearing roofs off several structures.
Meteorologists warned that conditions could worsen as the storms moved eastward into the evening. Initial reports suggest that at least six tornadoes touched down in the Houston area, with the potential for more to be identified as damage assessments continue. Damage from both tornadic activity and straight-line winds was confirmed.
Mobile homes in Katy and Porter Heights suffered significant damage, with the weather service noting that the doors of a local fire station were blown in.
The storms led to significant disruptions, causing departure delays of over an hour at Houston’s major airports, Bush Intercontinental and Hobby.
Power outages affected approximately 71,000 utility customers in Mississippi, a number that is expected to increase as the situation develops. Authorities are currently focusing efforts on safety checks and ensuring all residents are accounted for, with formal damage assessments anticipated to begin early Sunday morning.
