President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his dedication to supporting the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in creating a strong and efficient digital identity system for Nigeria. He highlighted that every Nigerian’s unique identity is essential for their fundamental rights to protection and support within society, irrespective of their location.
Recent statistics indicate that the number of Nigerians registered with National Identification Numbers has soared to 110 million, marking a 2.39% increase from 107.34 million reported at the end of May 2024.
Speaking at the National Day of Identity in Abuja, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Tinubu emphasized the significance of digital identity in enhancing access to vital services and advancing socioeconomic development. The event celebrated the sixth iteration of the National Day of Identity, themed “Digital Public Infrastructure: Enabling Access to Services.”
Tinubu stated, “In today’s digital age, having proof of identity goes beyond convenience; it is fundamental to our socioeconomic advancement. Digital Public Infrastructure is essential for facilitating access to crucial services, such as healthcare, education, and financial inclusion.”
He underscored that a strong digital identity system is linked to his administration’s eight-point agenda, which includes food security, poverty reduction, economic growth, job creation, and enhancing the business environment. These initiatives aim to ensure that government programs effectively reach those in need.
“Verifiable identity is crucial for delivering the appropriate services to the right individuals. A robust digital identity empowers citizens, promotes economic transactions, and bolsters governance transparency,” Tinubu added.
In her address, NIMC Director General Abisoye Coker-Odusote stated that Nigeria is progressing towards harmonizing its digital identity, a feat attributed to strategic management by the current NIMC leadership. She noted that Digital Public Infrastructure is vital for Nigeria’s economic development, connecting citizens with essential services.
Coker-Odusote elaborated that the recent Student Loan Initiative has already benefited 257 institutions, assisting 332,715 students in securing loans and enabling payments for over 18,000 of them, demonstrating the effectiveness of digital identity in removing barriers to education.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo remarked on the significance of the day, highlighting its potential to unlock new opportunities for Nigerians to engage in government programs and reap associated benefits. He emphasized that a digital identity system is critical for the effective planning of socio-economic initiatives and overall development in Nigeria.
