Beetlejuice 2 is generating buzz as it approaches its release date on September 6, 2024. Director Tim Burton has explained the absence of original cast members Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, who portrayed Adam and Barbara Maitland in the beloved 1988 classic. Their exclusion has stirred discussions among fans eager to see the sequel.
Tim Burton Explains Absence of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis in Beetlejuice Sequel
In a recent interview, Tim Burton shared his vision for the sequel, noting that he aimed to explore a new storyline that doesn’t include Baldwin and Davis’ characters, despite their significance in the original film. “I didn’t want to just tick any boxes. They were an integral part of the first one, but I wanted to focus on something different,” Burton stated.
The upcoming Beetlejuice 2 will reveal a storyline where Adam and Barbara have found a “loophole” allowing them to leave their former home in Winter River, Connecticut. The news about Baldwin and Davis might disappoint some long-time fans, especially as Winona Ryder returns as Lydia Deetz, accompanied by Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz and Michael Keaton reprising his role as Betelgeuse.
Burtan emphasized the importance of timing in crafting this sequel, which explores the relationship between three generations: Lydia, her stepmother Delia, and her teenage daughter Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega. The narrative unfolds after the death of Lydia’s father, Charles, drawing the Deetz family back to Winter River.
“A sequel like this really had to deal with the time,” Burton explained. “The three generations of mother, daughter, granddaughter are at the heart of it. I couldn’t have made this personally back in 1989.”
