In a surprising revelation, Carrie Coon has disclosed that a scene from The White Lotus Season 3 featuring a nonbinary or transgender child was removed due to the implications of Donald Trump’s re-election.
Coon portrays Laurie Duffy in HBO’s acclaimed series, which is helmed by creator Mike White. The first seven episodes of the highly anticipated third season are currently available for streaming on Max, with the finale set to air on April 6, 2025.
Reasons Behind the Removal of the Nonbinary Child Scene in The White Lotus Season 3
During an interview, Coon explained that the scene in question provided important context to Laurie’s home life, revealing that her child identified as nonbinary, possibly transgender, and preferred they/them pronouns. Coon emphasized that the narrative portrayed Laurie grappling with these complexities in conversations with her friends. The removal of this scene made the pivotal question raised in episode 3 about Kate’s voting choices feel more provocative and personally relevant to Laurie, particularly given her child’s identity.
Coon noted, “The season was written before the election, and with the Trump administration intensifying the cultural war against transgender individuals, Mike felt it was inappropriate to include such a small scene on a topic of significant consequence during the editing process.”
Throughout the season, Coon shares the screen with Michelle Monaghan, who plays Jaclyn Lemon, and Leslie Bibb as Kate Bohr, adding depth to the portrayal of their longstanding friendship during a girls’ trip.
The ensemble cast of The White Lotus Season 3 also features Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Sarah Catherine Hook among others.
