Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has underscored the essential role of the media in enhancing Nigerians’ comprehension of the legislative process. Speaking at a training session for the House of Representatives press corps in Zaria, he highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between the legislature and the media.
The event, themed “Understanding the Legislative Agenda of the House: The Media Perspective,” focused on equipping journalists with the knowledge necessary to report accurately on legislative activities. Abbas praised parliamentary reporters for their commitment to professionalism, which he believes empowers citizens to engage actively in governance.
“Through your diligent reporting, millions of Nigerians gain insights into our legislative processes and their impact on everyday life,” Abbas stated. He emphasized that the partnership between lawmakers and media is crucial for promoting citizen engagement and accountability.
The Speaker further elaborated on the 10th House’s ambitious Legislative Agenda, which addresses key national challenges, including economic growth, national security, healthcare access, education reform, and good governance. He noted significant progress since the House’s inauguration on June 13, 2023, highlighting the passage of 89 bills aimed at delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians.
Among the notable legislation passed are the Electric Power Sector Reform (Amendment) Bill, the Federal Audit Service Bill, and the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act (Amendment) Bill. Abbas remarked that these laws are vital for governance, security, and economic reform.
Addressing the issue of media representation, Abbas urged journalists to practice precision in reporting, warning against the mischaracterization of bills. He stressed that a bill remains a proposal until it navigates the thorough legislative process, including public hearings.
The retreat featured insightful sessions, including a presentation by a Political Science Professor on the 19th House Legislative Agenda, emphasizing the need for correspondence to understand and report on the Green Chamber more effectively.
In a statement, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Gboyega Onadiran, expressed gratitude for the retreat’s organization, advocating for continued collaboration between the media and the legislature to enhance understanding of legislative matters. He reaffirmed the press’s role in promoting transparency and accountability, commending the 10th House for its commitment to good governance.
