Terry Rozier, currently a player for the Miami Heat, is under investigation for alleged involvement in a sports betting scandal linked to a game against the New Orleans Pelicans in March 2023. This federal probe has also implicated other players, resulting in notable consequences, including the lifetime ban of a Toronto Raptors player. Here’s the latest on the investigation.
Terry Rozier Faces Investigation for Alleged Illegal Betting
Recent reports indicate a federal investigation into Miami Heat point guard Terry Rozier regarding suspected illegal sports betting during a game played against the Pelicans. At the time, Rozier was with the Charlotte Hornets before his transfer to Miami in January 2024.
Rozier played approximately 9 minutes and 36 seconds in the controversial game before leaving the court due to foot problems and did not return for the remainder of the season. This incident gained attention as Rozier was not listed on the Hornets’ injury report during that period.
Concerns arose regarding bets placed on Rozier in that match, leading the sports integrity monitoring firm to alert the NBA about inconsistencies. In response, several sportsbooks halted further betting on Rozier. It is important to note that, as of now, Rozier has not been accused of any criminal activity.
The NBA has committed to assisting federal prosecutors in this ongoing investigation. An NBA spokesperson stated, “The league conducted an inquiry and found no violations of NBA rules. We are cooperating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York concerning this matter.”
Furthermore, Rozier’s legal representation has expressed confidence in the outcome, noting, “We are aware of the NBA’s previous investigation that cleared Mr. Rozier of any wrongdoing and remain optimistic that the ongoing federal inquiry will reach the same conclusion.”
