Terremoto causa mais de 1.700 mortes e intensifica crises em Mianmar

Enquanto equipes de resgate lutam para salvar sobreviventes do terremoto de magnitude 7,7 que abalou Mianmar na sexta-feira (28), os moradores enfrentam ataques aéreos constantes do Exército. Esse terremoto é um dos mais devastadores da história do país e resultou em mais de 1.700 mortos, conforme relatado pela junta militar que controla a nação.

As autoridades do país informam que cerca de 3.400 pessoas estão feridas e 300 permanecem desaparecidas. Neste domingo (30), um tremor adicional de magnitude 5,1, de acordo com o Serviço Geológico, paralisou temporariamente as operações de resgate. Na Tailândia, o número de mortos subiu para 17.

Com a escassez de equipamentos adequados, muitos moradores de Mandalay, a segunda maior cidade e uma das mais atingidas pelo desastre, utilizaram as próprias mãos para tentar resgatar pessoas soterradas logo após o terremoto. O epicentro foi localizado na vizinha região de Sagaing.

No sábado (29), as operações de busca receberam um reforço com 82 membros da equipe de resgate, permitindo um avanço nas atividades. Países como Índia, Malásia, Rússia, Singapura e Tailândia também se mobilizaram, enviando suprimentos e pessoal, mas existe incerteza sobre como a ajuda chegará às áreas mais necessitadas, já que a capital Naypyitaw foi menos afetada em comparação com Mandalay, que testemunhou o colapso de prédios e infraestruturas.

Agências humanitárias alertam que Mianmar não dispõe da estrutura necessária para lidar com as consequências desse desastre. Desde 2021, o país enfrenta uma crise política intensa, após um golpe militar que derrubou o governo civil, piorando a situação de violência e sobrecarregando o sistema de saúde, que já lidava com surtos de cólera e outras enfermidades.

Antes da tragédia, estimativas da ONU já previam que a fome ameaçaria cerca de um terço da população até 2025. Agora, os esforços para auxiliar os sobreviventes estão sendo dificultados pela falta de suprimentos médicos essenciais, como materiais para tratar fraturas, bolsas de sangue e anestésicos, além dos danos em hospitais e vias de comunicação, que complicam ainda mais as operações de resgate.

A Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) enviou quase três toneladas de suprimentos médicos a Mandalay e Naypyitaw, onde milhares de feridos estão sendo atendidos. A Cruz Vermelha lançou uma campanha para arrecadar US$ 100 milhões, enquanto a China se comprometeu a fornecer ajuda no valor de US$ 13,8 milhões para apoiar os esforços de socorro.
