Warangal’s own Ajay Kumar Mattewada, a renowned micro-sculptor, has achieved a remarkable feat by creating a meticulously detailed microscopic replica of the iconic ‘Christ the Redeemer’ statue, one of the Seven Wonders of the World located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While the original statue towers at an impressive 30 meters (98 feet), Mattewada’s miniature version measures only 1.1 mm and is crafted within the eye of a needle. This astonishing sculpture showcases intricate details, including the folds of Christ’s garments and the positioning of his fingers, all with extraordinary precision.
Mattewada shared that he utilized self-prepared wax, plastic powder, and caterpillar hair for coloration. His meticulous detailing involved delicate tools made from silkworm hair, which are so fine they can be manipulated with a mere breath. “It took me 90 painstaking hours over two months for the creation of this masterpiece. It can only be viewed under a microscope,” he stated.
This is not the first display of Mattewada’s impressive talent. In 2017, he created a microscopic golden cross of Jesus measuring just 0.95 mm in height and 0.17 mm in width. Additionally, in 2023, he sculpted ‘The Last Supper,’ which features Jesus and his twelve disciples.
Mattewada’s artistry has garnered him international attention. In May 2024, he showcased his micro-sculptures at the prestigious World Art Dubai exhibition, where art enthusiasts from 65 countries admired his work. The event highlighted 400 prominent artists presenting diverse artistic talents.
In June 2024, he clinched first place in the “India-America Space Cooperation Visual Art Competition,” organized by the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad. His striking needle-eye art earned him a special invitation to the U.S. National Day celebrations, where he received accolades from notable figures, including the Consul General and Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister. His micro-sculptures were also displayed at the event.
Mattewada’s earlier works have received high praise, including his micro-sculptures illustrating the Dandi March, which were permanently exhibited at the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial Museum in Dandi, Gujarat, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.
As one of only a handful of artists worldwide specializing in needle-eye sculptures, Ajay Kumar Mattewada’s unique artistry continues to set him apart. Starting his journey in 2004 with a world record, he has featured in the Limca Book of Records five times. His intricate works have received recognition from various prominent leaders, including former Prime Ministers and the current Prime Minister.
