Austrian officials announced the arrest of a 19-year-old man who allegedly planned a suicide attack targeting thousands at a concert in Vienna. According to authorities, the suspect had vowed allegiance to the Islamic State group and expressed his intent to use explosives and knives in an attack.
In light of the threat, all three sold-out performances by Taylor Swift at the Ernst Happel Stadium have been canceled, impacting over 195,000 anticipated attendees. Reports indicate that the suspect had stolen chemicals from his previous job at a metal processing company, where he also began constructing explosives.
During a press briefing, security officials revealed that the arrested individual, believed to be the primary suspect among three, had intentions to drive a vehicle into the crowd outside the concert venue. Chemical substances and devices were discovered at his residence, indicating significant preparation for the attack.
According to Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria’s Directorate for Protection of the State and Intelligence, weapons were recovered from the suspect’s home, affirming that he aimed to carry out his attack “either today or tomorrow at the concert.” The teenager had previously recorded a video detailing his plans, quit his job the prior month, and hinted at having “big plans.”
The suspects include a 17-year-old who was associated with a company providing services for the concert venue and a 15-year-old who remained silent during questioning. Authorities confirmed no additional suspects were being pursued.
Austria’s Interior Minister declared that an imminent tragedy was averted thanks to international intelligence collaboration, as Austrian law prohibits the censorship of messaging platforms. He highlighted the rising terrorist threat across Europe, specifically noting that large concerts are often targets for extremist attacks.
Security remains at a heightened level in Austria despite no specific threats linked to upcoming events. Following her Vienna concerts, Swift is set to perform five shows at Wembley Stadium in London next week, prompting UK officials to assess additional security measures for the artist’s performances. London’s Mayor reassured the public that measures will be in place to ensure concertgoers’ safety during these events.
