Tangerang, ECNETNews – Indonesia proudly hosts the prestigious Asian Taekwondo Open Championship 2024, marking the first time the country has held an international martial arts event. The competition is taking place at the Sport Center Indoor in Stadium Tangerang, Kelapa Dua.

The tournament runs until October 19, 2024, featuring 450 athletes from various countries, including Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Lebanon, Macau, Malaysia, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, Singapore, Timor Leste, Uzbekistan, Jordan, and Indonesia.

Letjen TNI Richard TH Tampubolon, Chairman of Taekwondo Indonesia, stated that this tournament is significant as it is categorized as G2, ranking second in the world.
“We should be proud to host this G2 event. It offers an opportunity to improve our athletes’ rankings, paving the way for their participation in future competitions, including the Olympics,” he expressed on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

Airin Rachmi Diany, Chairman of Taekwondo Indonesia in Banten Province, mentioned that they are fielding four top athletes from Banten, with hopes for medal wins.
“We are grateful for this international competition hosted in Banten. We hope everything goes smoothly and leads to international achievements,” she stated.
Moreover, Major General Amrin, the event’s organizer, elaborated that this championship not only showcases top Asian athletes but also celebrates the 79th anniversary of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).
“This is a ranking 2 event on the World Taekwondo calendar, the first of its kind in Indonesia. As hosts, we aim for a robust participation from Taekwondo federations across Indonesia, including contributions from the military and police. We have 28 national teams competing: 14 in Kyorugi and 14 in Poomsae, with coaching support from Korea Selatan,” he added.
