TORONTO, Canada – On Sunday, August 18, from 10:00 am to Noon, the Taiwanese community will gather at Earl Bales Park to advocate for Taiwan’s participation in the UN General Assembly, #UNGA79.
This important event will be hosted by community leaders and aims to highlight the significance of Taiwan’s voice on the international stage.
The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is set to kick off at UN headquarters in New York on September 10, 2024.
This year’s theme for #UNGA79 is “Unity in diversity, for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for everyone everywhere.”
In the face of various global challenges, including authoritarian expansionism that has sparked humanitarian and economic crises, the need for collaborative international efforts has never been more crucial.
As a sovereign and independent nation, Taiwan has continuously acted as a positive force within the global community. It seeks to collaborate with other nations to promote sustainable growth and recovery from the pandemic.
UNGA Resolution 2758, which addresses China’s representation by the People’s Republic of China (PRC), does not mention Taiwan and does not imply that Taiwan falls under the PRC’s jurisdiction. This resolution does not have relevancy to Taiwan’s representation.
China has misinterpreted UNGA Resolution 2758 to advance its ‘one-China principle’ and incorrectly asserts that this resolution has resolved Taiwan’s UN representation. Such claims lack historical support and legal legitimacy.
Despite pressure from China, the UN’s exclusion of Taiwanese participation runs counter to the principles outlined in the UN Charter. Taiwan urges the global community to remain vigilant against these actions aimed at undermining international representation.
To maintain peace and uphold the rules-based international order, there must be a collective effort to reject China’s misleading assertions and prevent any unilateral modifications to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
