Stevie Wonder electrified the audience at the 2024 Democratic National Convention on August 21, performing his iconic hit “Higher Ground” from the acclaimed 1973 album Innervisions. Before his performance, Wonder delivered a powerful keynote address at the event, hosted at Chicago’s United Center, where he officially endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz. He passionately urged attendees to “choose courage over complacency” and motivated them to “Get up! And go vote!”
In his heartfelt speech, Wonder emphasized the need for peace in the world, stating, “This year I pray very hard for peace to come to our world’s nations… But, also, to each one of our hearts, even though our hearts have been beaten and broken.” He underscored the importance of action and unity, declaring, “We must keep on keepin’ on, until we truly are a united people of these United States. And then we will reach a higher ground.”
This marks Wonder’s first appearance at a Democratic National Convention since 2008, when he supported Barack Obama’s candidacy. Later that evening, musical performances continued with John Legend and Sheila E. delivering a live rendition of “Let’s Go Crazy,” honoring the connection between Walz and the legendary artist Prince from Minnesota.
The 2024 Democratic National Convention has also showcased an impressive lineup of musical talents, including Maren Morris, Mickey Guyton, and James Taylor, among others. Additionally, while Beyoncé was not present at the convention, she contributed her powerful anthem “Freedom” for use in campaign ads supporting Harris. Neil Young also gave Walz permission to feature his song “Rockin’ in the Free World” during the event, reinforcing the intersection of music and political advocacy in this significant electoral season.
